That took some guts.

The ugly side of vintage.

*realistic side

^that. I’ve often thought “man it would be kind of cool to live in like the 40s except for the part where it would get awkward because of segregation and stuff…”

This photo is actually from a series of photos from the sit-ins, which most likely looked like this:The sit-ins were a non-violent approach to drive social change and they were said to be pretty successful in many local establishments. However, going back to the photo above, while it can’t be said for certain what exactly were the intentions of every boy “ganging up” around him, here is what we do know. That is a photo of sit-in protester Dion Diamond and many of those who were ganging up around him were members of the American Nazis Party of Arlington (yes, it was a thing.) Here is another photo from a different angle:In this angle we can clearly see the one boy with a Swastika and also George Lincoln Rockwell who was the founder of the ANP and a neo-Nazis icon. It sounded like this wasn’t the only run-in between the group of Nazis douchecanoes and the sit-in group either. So, before anyone jumps to conclusions about a bunch of white kids mobbing around a black kid, understand things aren’t as black and white as they seem…even in a black and white photograph.

I’ll admit I’m a little confused. Is this not a group of white people ganging around a sit in protester? I mean even if it was a group of neo-Nazis. Genuinely asking.

I think that they mean that just because they are white doesn’t mean that is the sole reason that they are ganging up on them. It’s because of their political beliefs.

Let me clarify, I wasn’t really responding to your comment, but rather piggy-backing on it just because the comments in the notes of this thread are atrocious, ignorant garbage. Most likely in the photo these young kids were gathering around to hear the commotion going on. Things like this didn’t happen very often in these towns and a bunch of young inquisitive kids are probably gathering around as the sit-in protester gets berated by the Nazis Party Members. The Nazis Party look to be passing out flyers to spread awareness (you can see one of the kids holding one) and they no doubt were trying to win over the youth through their prejudice display…because that’s what Nazis do.I just want to make sure that everyone knows the probability that every person in these photos were some kind of lynch mob out to harass this poor sit-in protester isn’t very likely. More likely the majority of them were just onlookers just witnessing the public fight. The biggest take-away I got from these great photos is that the peaceful sit-ins actually did make the difference in local businesses which were once segregated. I especially enjoy the look on their faces as if they seem to be calmly smiling in spite of being attacked.
